Ballybane Community Garden Open Day 2023: A Community Food Initiatives event

Galway City Partnership and Healthy Galway City are excited to support Ballybane Community Organic Garden for an afternoon of fun and food at the Ballybane Community Organic Garden Open Day on Thursday 24th August 12 pm – 3 pm.
This event is free to attend and everyone is welcome. The event takes place in the Ballybane Community Organic Garden, just across from the Ballybane Library, Castlepark Road, H91 FX98.

This event is a Community Food Initiatives  (CFI) event to promote healthy eating and nutrition within the community, so guests can expect lots of interactive events and opportunities to try delicious recipes and samples.  Volunteer gardeners will showcase their seasonal fruit and vegetables  including courgettes, plums, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and more.

Community Chef Delia Greally will be preparing  homemade pizzas with fresh toppings from the garden  using the gardens pizza oven - kids can get involved creating and enjoying their own culinary delights. They will also learn how to prepare a simple and delicious hummus to be enjoyed with vegetable crudités.

Galway Cookery Classes Kate Wright will be delivering a demo and talk on the use of common garden herbs in cooking and recipes; not to be missed by experienced chefs and novices alike! Learn how to add flavour and cut down on salt intake in your cooking.

Music therapist Ronan De Burca will lead a music workshop from from 1:30 pm - 3 pm; all are welcome and no experience is required. Simply drop by, pick up an instrument and enjoy yourself.

Ballybane Library will offer a workshop for children and young people transplanting strawberry runners; everyone can go home with their own strawberry plant to grow in their garden or on the window sill.

Galway Childcare Committee will be at the event with their amazing mud kitchen and sensory play - parents can learn about childcare options in Galway City and County.

There will be face painting and games, for children of all ages. Expect art, music, games, fun and lots of tasty, fresh foods.
Galway City Partnership has been chosen as Community Food Leader 2022 – 2024 for the CHO2 Region. This project is funded through the Safefood Community Food Initiative Funding Programme (CFI) (2022 – 2024) and administered by Secad.
